In 2013, Mat Brown, a software engineer and web designer, decided to leave his profession to pursue a career in art. Since then, he has designed numerous art pieces, including jewelry and the amazing shelves you see below. You’ll never believe how he stumbled across this amazing discovery. Nor will you believe just how talented of an artist he truly is after creating such an amazing innovative addition to his home.
Brown stated, “We were running a bit short on shelving in the kitchen and wanted somewhere we could store all the preserves we’re going to make from the garden this year, so we went to the timber yard to see what they had. They had this, 155cm long piece of chestnut.â€

And he continued, “It was pretty heavily cracked and pitted, with knotholes and so on. But, I had a plan. Resin inlay. A technique traditionally used with a colour-matched epoxy to the wood, to give an ‘invisible’ repair. I’m taking a slightly different approach.â€

He purchased aluminum tape that would help seal the holes.

Next, he used a level to make sure that he wouldn’t make a mess during the resin adding process.

Then he readied the mix!

He found that pigment would add an interesting addition to the resin.

Typically, resin inlay would be matched to the natural color of the wood, but Brown didn’t want to go that route.
This is what the resin mix looked like!

He then poured the resin into the larger cracks in the wood.

After that, it took him awhile to finishing planing carding and sanding the wood, but this would the end result.

Once all of the hard work was complete, Brown applied his first coat of oil.

It took about 8 coats of boiled linseed oil before the wood was up to Mat’s standards.
Here they are, chopped and ready to be installed!

But don’t forget that you’ll need brackets!

And voila! This is what the shelves look like in daylight….

As the day progresses and the sun begins to set, the resin really begins to glow.

AMAZING!

After seeing these, I’m pretty sure I’ll never be okay with having plain shelves ever again.
