These tiny insects would probably have gone unnoticed by most if it weren't for macro photography.Â
These are planthopper nymphs.
Nymphs, in the insect world, are just baby bugs.
These ones, although small, are really interesting and kind of beautiful.
The colorful creatures can shoot firework-like tassels of wax that help them glide or get away from predators. They don't always keep this ability into adulthood.
The wax is hydrophobic, so it helps protect them from water. For some female species, it also helps to protect eggs.
This is the size of a baby planthopper in comparison to a human fingertip.
This adult planthopper kept its wax-shooting ability.
