These 4 Couples Wanted To Grow Old Together, So They Did The Most Amazing Thing

by N/A, 10 years ago | 2 min read

When you find great friends, you hang on to them. These four couples from Austin, Texas, have been best friends for 20 years, and they've only grown closer over the years. But they wanted to take it a step further.

So what did they do? They built a small commune of eco-friendly, self-sustaining mini homes out in the wilderness, so they could be as close to each other as humanly possible.

The four couples wanted to ensure their futures together...
So they built these quaint little bungalows by the Llano River, outside of Austin, each costing only $40,000.

The couples are all retired, or on the brink of retiring, and wanted to live somewhere tranquil and free of daily stresses and distractions. Fittingly, they named the endeavor, the "Llano Exit Strategy."

The houses are as humble and economical as they come...

At 400 square feet, each unit is only comprised of a bedroom/living room and bathroom, and has a queen-sized bed, couch, and full patio.

But are still incredibly warm and inviting.

To keep costs low, the couples forewent furbishing the interior with finished drywall, and opted to use plain plywood instead, which actually gives off a very warm vibe.

“It’s a high-design finish that doesn’t cost a lot of money,” said architect Matt Garcia

Another great design aspect of the homes is their corrugated steel exteriors, which reflects the sunlight and greatly helps in keeping the interiors cool throughout the summers.
Their roofs also funnel rainwater into massive 5,000-gallon barrels for them to use to help hydrate the parched plot of land they live on.

“This is a magical place, but it’s arid. We’re doing what we can to reserve as much water as possible for the native trees and grasses,” says resident Fred Zipp.

"Magical" indeed.
The four couples are constantly falling in love with their quaint, eco-friendly homes more and more every day.

“It’s like a Disney movie out here. We have hare, bobcat, deer, and all kinds of birds. As we spend more and more time here, we find more and more,” said resident Jodi Zipp

And how could you not?
Especially when you're living right next door to all your best friends.
