This Family Needed Two Rooms, But Only Had One. Their DIY Solution Was Brilliant

This Reddit user and natural born DIY-er had several small issues on his hands. First, he had a sad old guest bedroom that desperately needed a change, and was gravely underused to begin with. Second, he and his wife were ready to start trying for their first kid, which meant they needed to clear out an existing room, likely their office. And third, both of their parents visited them semi-frequently, which meant they couldn't get rid of the guest bedroom.
Obviously, the two had to get creative. But they also had to remain practical. They couldn't eliminate the guest room, nor could they loft the bed - getting up and down would be too cumbersome for their parents. So naturally, they improvised. And what they ended up coming up with was a space-saving stroke of genius.
Here's the room beforehand. Pretty drab and uninviting.
First, they started by building a frame...
Then they installed some wall mounts for it to rest on.
After adding sturdy front supports, it was ready to be installed.
Then came the vertical support beams...
Things were coming together nicely by this point.
As you can see, they built a smaller secondary frame on rollers, to go underneath the structure.
Yup, that's where the bed's going.
Time for the flooring. But first, to prevent squeaking, a layer of felt and rosin paper is laid down.
Now the hardwood is ready to be installed.
Then some stairs. A little steep, but they'll do.
And of course, the rest of the paneling.
Lookin' good. Lookin' real good.
But they're not done. Next, they add on the skirting and trims.
Then, it was time to prime the wood.
First coat of paint...
And the second...
And a third, just for good measure.
Then they finish it off with some much-needed decorations.
And voila! An office and guest bedroom in one.
Now, they're parents can still have a comfortable stay with them...
AND with their old office cleared out, they'll have a vacant space for that first baby crib!
