The Island was named in 1791 by Spanish Naval officer Jose Maria Narvaeaz, commander of the Santa Saturina.
The island is home to just 350 permanent residents, including 70 children. They live completely off the grid, separated from mainstream Canadian culture.

Most residents live either without electricity or with alternative sources of power. This Lasqueti Island home is solar-powered with no back-up generator.

The community is focused on keeping its resources renewable. This waterwheel is used to generate electricity from a small creek.

Lasqueti is home to many artists, inventors, and environmentalists, and are one of the most educated communities in British Columbia.
